Ana Mercedes Hoyos was a Colombian painter and sculptor who gained national and international recognition for her vivid play of colors in abstract works of art as well as figurative paintings. She explored light, color, sensuality, and the bounty of her periphery through cubism and realism. Her interest in art grew while she was still at school, where she took private painting lessons from Luciano Jaramillo.

Early Life and Career

Born on September 29, 1942, in Bogotá to an architect couple Mejía Gutiérrez and Manuel José Hoyos Toro, Ana Mercedes Hoyos discovered her love for painting early on. For more than 50 years, she was considered one of the most important representatives of Colombian art. Throughout her prolific artistic career, Anna mounted individual exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide.


Her Pop-inspired works gave way to abstraction by the 1970s when she created architectural minimalist “Ventana” series (1971–1978), which won First Prize in the National Artists Salon of 1978 in Bogotá.

Hoyos’s obituary published by The New York Times described her as “one of the most important exponents of Colombia’s art for the last five decades.” She is survived by her husband Jacques Mosseri; daughter Ana Mosseri – also an artist – two grandchildren.
