Ke Huy Quan, a renowned American actor and filmmaker, has made his mark in the entertainment industry with notable works such as The Goonies, Breathing Fire, and Everything Everywhere All at Once. He even won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the latter film, becoming the first Asian man to win in that category.

But who are father and mother of Ke Huy Quan? James and Susan Hong are of Chinese descent and gave birth to Ke Huy on August 20th, 1971 in Saigon, South Vietnam. They have nine children together.

James and Susan Hong have been supportive of their son throughout his career. Despite being immigrants themselves, they wanted him to become a doctor or lawyer like many other immigrant parents do. However, they still supported him when he pursued acting instead.

In fact, after winning the Oscar award for Best Supporting Actor in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ke Huy Quan thanked his parents during his acceptance speech. He mentioned that he comes from a family that does not share emotions or express feelings but felt it was important to thank them publicly on this occasion.

Age Gap Revealed

There is little information available about James and Susan Hong’s age gap. However, it is known that they faced tragedy when James passed away in 2001.


Susan is described as a superstitious person who follows Buddhism. When Ke Huy was young she used to pray for him to have a promising career.

Family Life: Eight Siblings

Ke Huy Quan has eight siblings whose names are not all available publicly. The family had a difficult life early on due to political turmoil in Vietnam which led them fleeing as refugees.

Quan fled with five siblings along with their father while three other siblings and their mother went to Malaysia. After spending time in a refugee camp, the family was admitted to the United States as part of the Refugee Admissions Program in 1979.


Ke Huy Quan grew up in the US and completed his education there. He attended Mount Gleason Junior High School before enrolling at Alhambra High School in Alhambra. Later on, he pursued his passion for film by attending the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts.
